Opening Hello everyone, and thanks for taking the time to watch this short video. Today I’d like to explain the process for how our 2026 Year 9 and 10 students will be choosing their elective subjects. This is always such an exciting stage in their schooling—students get to explore areas that interest them, try new things, and find out what really sparks their passion. And as always, our goal is simple: to make sure every student feels engaged and supported, so they can be the very best version of themselves. In this video, I’ll step you through the process in five steps. Step 1 – Information & resources This week your child will bring home their Middle Schooling Subject Handbook. This handbook has all the details about the elective subjects on offer for next year. It’s a great chance for you to sit down together, look through the pages, and talk about what excites them. They’ll also be given a subject selection form which has your child’s name printed on it. This is where they will list their preferences. Step 2 – Guidance given to students To help them make these decisions, your child has already heard from our Arts Head of Department, and Technology Head of Department. They came along to TEAM to explain what the different electives involve, so students should already have a sense of what interests. Step 3 – Year level differences The way electives are structured depends on the year level. * In Year 9, students will complete four elective subjects—two each semester. * In Year 10, students will complete two elective subjects across the whole year. Step 4 – Ranking process On the subject selection form, students will need to rank their electives from 1 to 10—Number 1 being the subject they most want to do, and Number 10 being the one they are least interested in. While we can’t promise every student will get all of their top preferences, we really do our best to make this happen. In fact though, for the past three years, every student has been placed in their Number 1 choice. Where it sometimes gets tricky is with their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th choices, as this depends on staffing, resources, and the number of students who choose each subject. If that happens, we simply move down their list to the next subject they’ve ranked, so they’re still doing something that interests them. Step 5 – Parent role & deadline Once your child has completed their form, it needs to be signed by you—a parent or guardian—and returned to the front Administration Office by Monday 8 September. Because forms are processed in the order they come in, we do encourage students to hand theirs back as soon as they can. And it’s perfectly fine, and encouraged, for students to return it the very next day after they’ve received it. We’ll also make sure that students who are away this week for school commitments, or those who live at Leichardt House, have the same opportunity to complete their forms, as we understand forms will not be able to be returned immediately. Closing & next steps We know choosing electives can feel like a big decision, but please remind your child this is just the start of their journey into different areas of learning. Looking ahead, class lists will be published in early Term 4, and parents and carers will also get this information by email. Then, once 2026 begins, there will be a two-week amnesty period where students can change their subject if it doesn’t feel like the right fit. After Week 3 though, no further changes will be made, because we want students to settle in and not miss valuable learning time. For our Year 9 students, there’s also a re-election process in Term 2 for Semester 2 electives. We know that students’ interests can change—and sometimes staffing or resources change too—so this gives everyone some flexibility. Of course, it’s also completely fine if no changes are needed. If at any point you have questions, please reach out—we’re always here to help. Thanks again for your support, and we’re really looking forward to seeing your child take this next step in their learning journey.
