Learning fundamental maths is a gift to all of us. It provides you with the necessary tools to make decisions and find solutions. It teaches us to reason, problem-solve and communicate.
Year 7, 8 and 9
We aim to give all students the essential mathematical skills they will need in their personal and work life. Students will learn the fundamentals of mathematics, which will set them up for further specialised learning of mathematical study. An extra component of studying mathematics is developing the skills of reasoning, problem-solving and effective communication. Students will be able to explore the role and use of technology with mathematics.
Year 10
Mathematics at this level is fundamental for setting up future pathways. Students will work at core mathematics that lead to students developing knowledge, processes and skills relating to life in the community. This helps students to become functioning adults in society. Students will be numerate in a range of contexts. This subject is focussed on developing the knowledge, processes and skills required for Essential and General Maths in Year 11 and 12.
Year 10 - Advanced
Students may be involved in advanced mathematics where they engage in further study in mathematics leading them into the pathway of studying mathematics into their futures. They will engage with more complex topics, including theoretical content. Students studying the more advanced mathematics can possibly progress into Mathematical Methods in Year 11 and 12.
Year 11 and 12
General Mathematics – General Senior Subject
This subject builds on the mathematical skills acquired in Year 10. Students experience the relevance of mathematics to their daily lives by building on and developing key mathematical ideas including rates and percentages, concepts from financial mathematics, linear and non-linear expressions, sequences, the use of matrices and networks to model and solve authentic problems, the use of trigonometry to find solutions to practical problems, and the exploration of real-world phenomena in statistics. This subject does not include calculus.
Mathematical Methods – General Senior Subject
This subject enables students to apply their mathematical skills to real-world problems. They will become critical thinkers and problem solvers. Increasingly, the topics learned are more sophisticated, are more complex and build on concepts taught in Advanced Mathematics. The major domains are Algebra, Functions, Relations and their Graphs, Calculus and Statistics. Students will solve complex and abstract mathematical problems. They make complex use of factual knowledge to successfully formulate, represent and solve mathematical problems.
Specialist Mathematics – General Senior Subject
This subject is designed for the confident students who excel and enjoy mathematics. The topics have increasing levels of sophistication, complexity and builds on Functions, Calculus, and Statistics from Mathematical Methods. Vectors, Complex Numbers and Matrices are introduced. Students will be involved in practising essential mathematical routines to developing procedural fluency, through to investigating scenarios, modelling the real world, solving problem and explaining reasoning.
Essential Mathematics – Applied Senior Subject
This subject develops skills that go beyond the traditional ideas of numeracy. Mostly, students will be learning in the domains of Number, Data, Location and Time, Measurement and Finance. They will learn rules and facts from everyday mathematics. They will calculate using appropriate mathematical processes and will use mathematics to make informed predictions and decisions about financial priorities. There is an emphasis on estimation, problem-solving and reasoning, which all contributes to developing students into thinking citizens.
